Standing on the edge and peering down into the abyss is not too bad. After all, at 216 metres above the Bloukrans River with nothing man-made below, it is impossible for your brain to develop any kind of perspective. Of course that false sense of security is, well, thrown off the bridge! The plummet seems endless and is probably the longest six seconds of your life. In my case I was certifiably dead because I’m sure my heart stopped beating, I know I did not breathe and I saw the bright light at the end of the tunnel, on second thoughts that may have been the sunlight reflecting off the water that was approaching at, what felt like, the speed of light, certainly time stood still.

And it was not over yet. Just as you slow down and your brain begins to catch up with your body, the whole process happens in reverse and I knew that my heart was not working then because it, together with my stomach, was still heading towards the river. And guess what ... the screaming, wonderful, exhilarating nightmare happens all over again. By the time you are winched back to your starting position you are more alive than ever, more pumped with adrenalin and have LIVED more than at any other time in your life. Wow!!!

This is the highest commercial bungee jump in the world, set in one of the most beautiful places on our earth and, from the commercial point of view, one of the smoothest, most professionally managed activities I’ve ever encountered. After I had signed the forms and made my payment I never, not once, felt scared. The guys that helped me with my harness, walked me across the suspended bridge and led me to the edge were so efficient, well-trained and organised that I felt cocooned from danger.
