For those who enjoy absolute remoteness, this is the place for you. 57kms outside of Carnarvon in the Northern Cape, Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House is a national monument.

The house is accessed by a dirt road, far away from any noise or traffic. Just the wide-open spaces of the Karoo, the beautiful landscape and the amazing view of the clear night sky is what you can expect.

The house is completely off grid. There is no electricity, no mobile phone reception and no Wi-Fi.

The house is filled with history and charm and tastefully furnished with classic old wooden furniture. Candles and lamps add to the remote experience.

Corbelled houses are unique in south Africa and generally found in the Northern Cape. They were built by the Trek Boers between 1830 and 1880, using the material that was at hand in the Karoo.

The houses were built of stones, in a circle of ever diminishing diameter, and plastered using wheat chaff, sand and water. The walls are very thick keeping the house cool in the excessively hot summer months.

Stuurmansfontein Corbelled House was lovingly restored in the 1990’s by the Botha family.

This delightful self-catering house has two corbelled structures next to each other, each with a door and a window. One houses the living room and the other, the main bedroom.

The house comprises three bedrooms, comfortably furnished with double and single beds, tea/coffee facilities, a fire place, a safe, and an outside bathroom with a bath.

The kitchen has a gas fridge and gas stove, and all the necessary utensils, crockery and cutlery.

There is an outdoor shower, a reservoir to cool off in and a braai area which is shielded from the wind.

The house is light and cheerful and spotlessly clean.
