If you are visiting the coastal town of Paternoster on the West Coast and looking for a way to explore the area – I would recommend you do it on horseback and Drikus Horse Trails – also known as Paternoster Horse Tails, offers just that.
Paternoster – meaning ‘Our Father’, apparently derives its name from the prayers of ship-wrecked Portuguese sailors. Today it’s a small, laid-back fishing village. Its vicinity to Cape Town makes it a popular holiday destination for those seeking total peace and quiet.
Drikus Horse Trails is located at Swartrug Farm between Paternoster and Stompneusbaai. The horserides start at the farm and take you through the scenic West Coast farmlands before you reach the beach. See their gallery here.
In addition to its natural beauty, the area is also a bird-lovers’ paradise. Hence, there are few other ways (if any) I would recommend those wanting to experience the area.
Perhaps what also makes Drikus unique is that here you have the option of using your own horse or choosing from one of their many beautiful horses. Their horses are gentle and can be ridden by anyone regardless of horse-riding experience.
Rooms of Africa actually named them one of the Top 6 Beach Horse Trails in South Africa.
With the beach rides, you have a choice of daily beach rides and sunset rides. They also do sundowners and picnic baskets on request. Talk to them if you also require longer rides, stabling and accommodation.
Reviews from people, who have been to Drikus Horse Trails
“Een van doe beste perde trips in die hele SA. Ongelooflike perde en nog beter view!” wrote Inneke Mouton on their Facebook page.
Mark Truter added; “The gentle horses can be ridden by anyone even without experience.”
“As a rusty but reasonably experienced rider I couldn’t have chosen a better place! I did the regular beach ride (1.5 hours) on the first day and the lunch ride (2.5 hours plus lunch in a beach side restaurant in the middle) on the second, and both were excellent. I rode Spirit, Bonny and Moby and all were well matched to my ability. Mark, the guide, looked after me very well and was fun to ride with. He is a very experienced horseman and has lots of interesting stories to tell about his life with horses. The trails are all off-road and the beach is fabulous with long stretches of hard sand perfect for whatever speed you’re comfortable with. I really couldn’t recommend Drikus Horse Trails highly enough and will definitely be back!” said Jemma Batten.
