Fish Eagle Self Catering (Mtunzini - KwaZulu-Natal)
Fish Eagles Self Catering offers the perfect African bushveld setting
Need a break from the frenetic city? Want to inhale fresh air and spend some time on lazy outdoor pursuits?
Then Fish Eagles Self Catering in Mtunzini, KwaZulu-Natal, is where you need to spend a weekend. These low key, comfortable and easily accessed set of cottages are located across the road from the Mtunzini Country Club.
The Umlalazi Nature Reserve, with its pristine lagoon and beautiful beach, is also just a short walk away.
Fish Eagles has four self-catering cottages including two six-sleepers, one four- sleeper and one two-sleeper all nestled in a beautifully landscaped garden with lagoon and beach views.
Owned and managed by Lee Hasselbach, these cottages are just over an hour’s drive north of Durban. Mtunzini, appropriately meaning ‘place of shade’, has just the right amount of amenities to make the hamlet comfortable but small enough to have a holiday feel.
“Mtunzini is the home of the Palm Nut Monument. This grove of raphia palms beside the railway line is one of the few declared natural monuments in the country and is the best place to spot the rare Palmnut Vulture which nests close to the top of the palm. It is not uncommon to see the vultures flying overhead from your veranda.
“The lagoon on the Mlalazi River provides the perfect location for fishing and water skiing and there are cruises available for events and sunset outings.
“We have owned Fish Eagles since 2004 and have renovated and upgraded many times over the years. To meet our guests’ requirements,” says Lee.
“Fish Eagles is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is ideal for large family groups and groups of friends. Our manicured garden is large an ideal for fun activities. The communal pool comes in handy on those swelteringly hot days or after a day at the lagoon and beach.”
The accommodation offers all that is needed for self-catering - fridge, stove , microwave and a full set of cutlery and crockery. The furnishing is neat and uncomplicated and just what you need in a beach side holiday house. I found the bathrooms spotlessly clean.
There is plenty to do in this area and, to be honest, a weekend is too short. The Umfolozi and Hluhluwe Game Reserves as well as the St Lucia Estuary and Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk are a day trip away.
