The Hornbill Lodge - Where beauty and nature abound
Author: Masego Blouse
A home away from home is the best way to describe Hornbill Lodge. This tranquil and intimate getaway is located in the beautiful Magaliesburg mountain range and was once a family farm dating back to the 1700’s.
Upon arrival, guests receive a warm welcome from the staff. The owners, Cobie and Muriel Else, pride themselves in creating a cosy and homely atmosphere, where guests can let their hair down and relax.
The luscious, green scenery is surrounded by beautiful mountains and the Magaliesburg River, allowing guests to indulge in the spectacular views and enjoy nature. Access to the lodge is easy as all the roads are tarred.
This pet-friendly accommodation is ideal for families, couples or a casual getaway. The accommodation features a beautifully landscaped garden, outdoor swimming pool and restaurant.
The Lodge has impeccable facilities such as the Running Water Spa, where you can receive specialised massages and reflexology; camping and caravanning facilities; as well as a wedding and function venue for weddings and parties. There are also teambuilding facilities for companies or large groups.
For guests who would like to get out and about and enjoy the fresh mountain air, there are a number of activities to choose from such as hiking, mountain walks and rock pool swimming.
The rustic, thatched roof restaurant offers country style cooking. Guests can enjoy meals from the Ala Carte Menu, ranging from gourmet burgers, sea food and surf and turf to mouth-watering steaks that will tantalize your taste buds.
The accommodation offers six double rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a private patio with a view of the mountains and river and is equipped with air conditioning and DStv.
There is one self-catering cottage on the premises that has four bedrooms and accommodates eight guests. The cottage has breath-taking views and is perfect for a large family.
The lodge also has a main lounge with a fire place, to accommodate those cold winter nights and encourage a pleasant bonding experience amongst guests and the staff.
For me, the personal highlight of this beautiful lodge, was spending time with the owners and their family. Being a family run establishment, the prime purpose is to make guests feel at home and part of the family, as they believe that family plays a major role in ones well-being.
Cobie, the owner of the Lodge said, “The transformation seen in a guest from the time they arrive to the time they leave is incredible. When they arrive they are full of stress from their daily routine, but once they have spent some time here, they relax and leave the lodge revived. That moment is the most rewarding for the family and staff”.
The lodge has no internet access, as the owners aim is for the holiday experience to be an antidote to people’s busy and technologically bombarded lives. They want their guests to relax during their stay and spend time with each other, bonding with their families, not with their phones.
My stay at Hornbill Lodge was tranquil and soothing. It was refreshing to wake up every morning to the sound of birds, the gentle running of the Magaliesburg River and the beautiful site of the mountains.
My time at the lodge gave me the chance to appreciate the beauty of nature, which I don’t often get the opportunity to do with my busy routine.
I visited Hornbill Lodge to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and in return I received a one of a kind experience, which truly revitalized me. The lodge is definitely a home away from home.
